Group claims responsibility for killing police commander

ESAT News (November 23, 2017)
An armed group took responsibility for the killing of a federal police commander for the north west region of Ethiopia in Bahir Dar on Tuesday.
Patriotic Ginbot 7, a group opposing the Ethiopian regime said in a statement that its forces had carried out the deadly attack on commander Desalegn Lijalem. The statement said the commander was stabbed to death by operatives of the group.

The group also said the commander was on his way home from a dinner party for the 37th anniversary of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM).
Patriotic Ginbot 7 says the late commander Desalegn was responsible for the loss of lives and crimes against humanity following the anti-government protests in the city of Bahir Dar in the summer of 2016 in which hundreds were killed as security forces shot live bullets into crowds. ESAT sources also say that the commander had directed the deadly crackdowns against protesters.
Head of the Amhara regional communication bureau, Nigussu Tilahun however said on his Facebook post that the commander had died of natural causes. ESAT sources from the region said the communication head was just trying to calm tension that has escalated within the police force following the killing of the commander.
At least 50 protesters were killed in one day in Bahir Dar at the height of the protests in 2016.
The commander was sent to the Felege Hiwot Hospital in Bahir Dar where he was pronounced dead.
His body was taken to Tselemt, his birthplace, for burial.
